Talk About Techno-Influenced

I just thought I’d share this picture I took of my students’ puppet stage back in October. I had to be away during the last week of October last fall so one of the assignments I gave my grade nine students while I was gone was to create a puppet stage. When I came back, I had visualized a traditional looking puppet stage (in my eyes anyway)… Well, I was really surprised when I walked into my classroom to see this:

Puppet Stage

Wasn’t that a creative idea? We now have this stage ready to go if students want to make a puppet play as a final project in Language Arts (by the way, my major project focuses on the multiple intelligences). A couple of students had used it already for their projects back in December.
My students also fool around with it (once in awhile) by pretending to “plug in” the computer headphones on the side of the stage while another student sings silently inside.

As if we didn’t have enough issues with tradition now we have to compete against technology. I love this puppet stage, you are an awesome teacher. You must have taught your students about technology! How did the puppet show go?

The puppet show was great. My student even had background music to go with his play (some kind of flute instrumental). It was awesome.

Today’s students are so digitally savy that it is scary and amzing at the same time. The puppet stage that your students created is not something you would have seen in the 90′s or even the early 2000′s but it is a relevant and practical set for today’s day and age. I teach grade 4 and every day I am amazed at the digital abilities of my students. My grade 4 student’s navigation skills and technological problem solving abilities are creative and complex. Marc Prensky wrote an interesting article that compares and analyzes students of today and yesterday. Here is a link to it.

Thanks for the link Miles, it was a good and interesting read. I wouldn’t mind learning more about the topic of the digital native vs. digital immigrant. It would also be nice to see more examples of what Marc Prensky suggests we do for changing how we teach. I’m all up for it. Again, thanks for the link. I’ll look further into it :)
